Garden design services
Peter Reader Landscapes offers a full range of garden design services to deliver and implement the garden you desire, including: full garden redesign, partial redesigns and renovations, planting plans and garden consultations (which include advice on plants, soil and pruning through to water features and guidance on maintenance). If you project involves other design professionals then we are delighted to work and collaborate with them and have experience of doing so.
Every garden and client is different, and so our role is to work with you to bring out the spirit and magic of your outside space. Whether you are looking for a complete garden makeover and build, or perhaps just a border re-design or a new planting scheme, we can tailor our approach to your specific needs. Every project is different in what is required, but there are some common steps to most (although not every job requires every step).
Step 1
Initial meeting:
We would arrange to meet with you at a time that is convenient to you. At this first meeting we discuss your hopes and requirements for the project and can explain the design process further if required. It is also an opportunity to show you some examples of our design work as well as viewing the space to be worked on. This initial meeting is free of charge.
Client Brief and Proposal:
After this first meeting we write to you laying out the detail of your brief, our approach to delivering it, the stages and services involved, and a breakdown of our fees. If you are happy with the proposal and wish to proceed there are a number of services and stages outlined below that may be applicable to your project:
Step 2
Site survey and analysis:
We would visit you again to carry out a detailed survey of the site which involves measuring the dimensions of the garden and the positions of existing structures and plants, a soil test for pH, and very importantly to really get to know the space and consider factors such as aspect, light, wind exposure, drainage and the surrounding environment. Very occasionally on large or very complex sites a professional survey may need to be commissioned.
Master Plan:
Having established all the facts, the design phase can begin. We will develop a new concept for your garden and draw up an overall ‘Master Plan’ reflecting this. The plan shows the overall design of the garden and details, proposed areas and type of planting, structures and hard-landscaping. We would then meet to review the plan which would also be accompanied by visuals, helping to bring our ideas to life for you. The meeting to review these plans is an important opportunity to accommodate any changes you might request.
Step 3
Once the Master Plan is agreed we can move into the final detailed planning of the garden.
Planting Plan:
We would draw up a detailed planting plan showing the exact type, quantity and location of each plant. It is vital to follow the principle of ‘right plant, right place’, so that the chosen plants will thrive in your garden and look their best all year round. We would accompany this with a full plant schedule sourcing plants from nurseries that provide quality plants at a good price.
Building Plans:
If these are required we can produce construction drawings to aid in the building of the proposed hard-landscaping to required specification. We can then introduce you to a specialist contractor we have previously worked with to build your new garden. We can continue to oversee the project to completion if that is your wish. Alternatively, we can produce full specification and tender package preparation should you wish to put the project out to tender, and then similarly oversee the project to completion.
Planting:
It is generally recommended that soil improvement is undertaken at this time, as this will give your plants the best start and help them establish. All plants will be delivered to site and we will set them out before planting takes place.
Step 4
Aftercare:
Having acquired a beautiful new garden, we can produce a maintenance schedule should you require it, to help you to keep everything looking at its best all through the year. Ensuring your garden is a success is our top priority so we are happy to stay in contact with you if you require additional advice or a visit to the garden as it matures.
