'Four corners' - the build
All the hard landscape building for the garden was carried out by The Real Garden Company, lead by owner Tecwyn Evans, and ably supported by Peter Reader.
Wooden structures, such as the deck and the fence, were constructed beforehand, as was much of the raised planter for the olive tree. The rest of the building had to be completed in the 2 week time frame allowed by the RHS. From arrival at a blank canvas of earth with its grass removed, it took 8 days to complete the build and a further 3.5 days to undertake the planting. This allowed a further 2 days to let the garden settle in and for the plants to find their feet and turn to the sun. This is important as it allows an opportunity to tweak the planting, get the rill water flowing perfectly and for the garden to look natural, as if it has been there for a long time.
Virtually all the building of 'Four Corners' was undertaken by hand and we only employed a crane lorry to lift in the very heavy planter and olive tree. This allowed us to deliver a real craftsman’s finish to the garden, particularly the dry stone walling lining the rill and the 'Hit and Miss' fence that bordered 2 sides of the finished garden. It is a tribute to Tecwyn and his team that the garden had such a natural and quality finish, with a number of attractive detailing features within it. The Sempervivum frames and the insect home were also made by hand by Peter Reader and his father.
